Stomach bloating
Stomach bloating is the uncomfortable distension of the abdomen resulting from gas accumulation, fluid retention, or gastrointestinal irritation caused by the ingestion of certain psychoactive substances or their inactive fillers and binders.
Description
Stomach bloating describes a state in which the abdomen becomes visibly distended and feels uncomfortably full, tight, or swollen. In the context of psychoactive substance use, this typically results from the gastrointestinal tract reacting to the physical or chemical properties of the ingested material, producing excess gas, retaining fluid, or experiencing localized inflammation that causes the stomach to expand beyond its normal comfortable volume. The effect can range from a mild sense of fullness to a pronounced, visible distension that some users describe as resembling mild pregnancy.
Several mechanisms contribute to substance-induced bloating. Direct GI irritation from powders, plant matter (particularly mushroom material with its indigestible chitin), or chemical compounds triggers defensive fluid secretion and gas production in the stomach and intestines.Altered gut motility — either the slowing of transit (from opioids, anticholinergics) or the disruption of normal peristaltic patterns (from serotonergic compounds) — can cause gas and partially digested material to accumulate rather than moving through the tract normally.Osmotic effects from certain substances can draw water into the intestinal lumen, contributing to the feeling of fullness and distension.
The bloating is typically self-limiting, resolving within hours to a day or two as the offending material is fully processed and eliminated. Drinking water can help, as it supports normal GI transit and dilutes any irritating substances in the gut. Light physical movement and walking may also encourage gas passage and relieve some of the discomfort. Lying in the fetal position or on the left side is commonly reported to ease gas-related bloating.
While stomach bloating is not dangerous, it is one of those effects that can meaningfully detract from the quality of an experience — it is hard to fully surrender to a beautiful psychedelic journey when your stomach feels like a balloon. For substances known to cause bloating (particularly mushrooms and plant-based preparations), alternative preparation methods such as making tea and straining out the plant material can significantly reduce GI side effects.
