Having recently started Tranylcypromine and finding it fairly effective for my long-standing mental health issues, one of my concerns was how it may interact with my recreational substance of choice, Kava.
Ever since I lost a supplier of some truly astounding root I have found myself chasing those experiences at any opportunity, but never being able to repeat it. It is somewhat worrying to feel such a strong pull towards a recreational drug, but thankfully circumstance has largely mediated my use. As I was visiting another city and had some privacy in my hotel, I was feeling a particularly strong urge to drink some Kava.
After a cautious low dose experiment the night before, where no blood pressure changes were noticed, I decided to pursue a full experience.
I decided on a dose of 62.5g, which with potent medium grind kava is about as high as I am able to dose before motion sickness and nausea ruin the experience. This dose was prepared in with approx 1250ml of water to make ten 125ml doses.
Throughout the experience I kept notes of what I was experiencing:
t -11:00 20mg Tranylcypromine, morning dose.
t -7:00 10mg Tranylcypromine, afternoon dose.
t +0:00 First dose consumed, I head into town to secure some takeout for dinner later on.
t +0:25 Returned to accomodation, second dose taken.
t +0:34 Slight rushing sensation, that I have come to know as the come-up. Lasts only momentarily.
t +0:42 Definite inebriation, consistent with mid-quality kava.
t +0:43 Third dose consumed. This level of intoxication would be too heavy to promote social interaction.
t +0:45 Ears are ringing slightly. With very high quality kava this usually accompanies euphoria, and is usually absent from inferior root, however my ears seem more prone to ringing while taking Tranylcypromine.
t +0:53 This dose is definitely stronger than it would be without Tranylcypromine.
t +0:59 Fourth dose consumed.
t +1:10 I am feeling that this dose would promote social interaction again, my inhibitions feel reduced.
t +1:15 Fifth dose taken, feeling quite sedated.
t +1:30 Sixth dose taken, very sedated but non-euphoric
t +1:40 "Almost peaking". I felt that I was on the verge of breaking through into the all encompassing kava space that has become so difficult to reach.
t +1:45 Seventh dose. Fairly inebriated now, in a calm quiet manner.
t +2:00 Eighth dose. "If this is as deep as I go, it would be enough"
t +2:18 Ninth dose. Very inebriated but not euphoric.
t +2:20 Final dose consumed. "Slight nausea, hopefully will not develop further". Eyes slightly red, pupils slightly dilated.
t +2:26 "Stronger, slight buzzing sensation in limbs, ringing in ears".
t +2:30 Slight difficulty focussing eyes.
t +2:40 Eating now-cold takeout meal (food following usually intensifies the effects).
t +2:53 Eyes noticeably bloodshot, difficulty walking straight.
t +2:59 Not sure if this should be called a peak. Intense limb melting sensation, ears ringing, non-euphoric.
t +3:00 Slight disorientation on head movement, almost to motion sickness.
t +3:05 Coming down slightly, dysphoria and desire to redose. Surely would if it were possible, however having eaten already, further doses would be ineffective. Will consume shells faster next session.
t +3:30 Still impaired but not enjoyably so. Neutral.
t +4:05 Struggling to keep eyes open, ready for sleep.
Overall it turned out to be a very typical kava session for me. Possibly slightly stronger than without Tranylcypromine, but not significantly so. Going into the session there was very little material on whether the combination was safe or not, apart from a few anecdotal statement that nothing bad seems to have happened. I have tried the combination without any noticeable interactions. This does not mean that it is safe, however I personally will have no concern in repeating the experience.
