I started using drugs and alcohol to change the way I feel about 21 years ago when I was 16. In the beginning it seemed normal. I really believed that the only way to get through the human experience was to find a regimen of chemicals to make it bearable. I spent 20 years attempting to find that perfect blend never realizing that it was a spiritual sickness that made life so difficult for me to face.
In the end I needed to take a few shots of vodka every few hours just to keep the DTs at bay. I was so desperate and broken I was willing to try anything. I went to treatment, started working the 12 steps, got a sponsor and discovered the joy that comes with working with others and giving back what was so freely given to me.
My life is completely indistinguishable from what it was when I started this journey, and I discover new joys in life every day. If you're new to this or wondering if you can live a life free from addiction, I assure you there is a solution! For me it was the steps. Whatever path you take, you have to give it your all. If you are an addict like me you would have done anything to satisfy the need to use, and you have to be willing to do anything to stop. You are worth it! You have so much to offer!
