My experienced friend offered to sit for my first mushroom trip. He'd done this for others before and his approach was thoughtful and reassuring.
Preparation: we discussed my intentions (curiosity and openness), set up the living room with comfortable seating and soft lighting, prepared a playlist, set out water, fruit, and blankets. He explained what to expect at each phase and established a signal I could use if I needed help — just squeeze his hand.
T+0:00 ate 2g in a peanut butter sandwich (masks the taste perfectly). T+0:30 first alerts — slight giddiness and enhanced colors. My sitter smiled and said "here we go" which made me laugh and set a positive tone.
T+1:00-3:00 beautiful experience. Gentle visuals — the wood floor grain was flowing like water, colors were saturated, and I had profound closed-eye visuals of geometric gardens. At one point anxiety crept in and my sitter simply said "you're safe, this is the mushrooms, it will pass" and it did. That single reassurance prevented what could have become a spiral.
T+3:00-4:00 we talked about what I was experiencing. He asked open questions, never directed the experience, just held space. I felt safe enough to go deeper emotionally than I would have alone.
T+5:00 back to baseline. We ate dinner and talked about integration — how to bring the insights into daily life.
If you're new to psychedelics: get a sitter. Not someone who's also tripping. A sober, experienced, trusted person. It transforms the experience from a gamble into a supported exploration.
