In the interest of honest reporting: I took 600mg of a well-reviewed Holy Basil extract (standardized to 2.5% ursolic acid) daily for 30 days and noticed no perceptible effect on anxiety, stress, sleep, focus, or any other parameter.
I kept a daily journal tracking mood, sleep quality, perceived stress, and cognitive performance on a 1-10 scale. The numbers did not change in any meaningful pattern from my pre-supplementation baseline.
A few possible explanations: (1) I am not particularly stressed or anxious at baseline -- my stress levels are moderate and manageable. Adaptogens may work best for people whose stress response is genuinely dysregulated. (2) Thirty days may not be long enough -- some of the positive clinical trials ran for 8 weeks. (3) Individual biochemistry varies. Not everyone responds to every supplement.
I do not think Holy Basil is ineffective -- the clinical trial data is too consistent for that conclusion. I think it may simply not be the right tool for someone in my situation. If you are a healthy young person with normal stress levels looking for a nootropic boost, this may not be the one. If you are chronically stressed with measurably elevated cortisol, the evidence is much stronger.
No side effects either, which at least confirms the safety profile.
