Panax ginseng (Korean/Asian ginseng) is one of the most extensively studied medicinal plants in the world, with a history of use spanning over 5,000 years in traditional Chinese medicine. The name Panax derives from the Greek panakos (all-healing), reflecting its traditional status as a panacea. Modern research has confirmed its adaptogenic, cognitive-enhancing, anti-fatigue, immune-modulating, and sexual health-promoting properties. Its primary active compounds, ginsenosides (triterpene saponins), have complex, often bidirectional pharmacological effects that explain its ability to restore homeostasis across multiple body systems. Panax ginseng should not be confused with American ginseng (Panax quinquefolius), which has a different ginsenoside profile and more calming effects, or Siberian ginseng (Eleutherococcus senticosus), which is not a true ginseng.
