Before You Read Anything Else
Psilocybin mushrooms are one of the safest psychoactive substances in terms of physiological toxicity. You cannot fatally overdose on them. But they produce powerful psychological effects that can be profoundly positive or deeply distressing depending on your preparation, mindset, and environment. This guide exists to help you maximize the chance of a meaningful experience and minimize the chance of a difficult one.
Should You Take Mushrooms?
Mushrooms are not for everyone. Before proceeding, honestly evaluate whether this applies to you:
Do not take mushrooms if:
- You have a personal or close family history of psychotic disorders (schizophrenia, schizoaffective disorder, bipolar I with psychotic features). Psychedelics can trigger or worsen psychotic episodes in vulnerable individuals. This is the most important contraindication.
- You are currently taking lithium. The combination carries a risk of seizures.
- You are taking SSRIs or SNRIs. These antidepressants significantly blunt the effects of psilocybin (serotonin receptors are already occupied), leading many people to take more and have unpredictable experiences. If you are on antidepressants, do not stop them to take mushrooms — taper decisions should only be made with a doctor.
- You are in a period of acute emotional crisis, grief, or instability. Mushrooms amplify your emotional state; they do not fix it.
- You feel pressured by others. If your gut says "not today," listen to it.
