In the context of psychoactive substance use, this typically results from the gastrointestinal tract reacting to the physical or chemical properties of the ingested material, producing excess gas, retaining fluid, or experiencing localized inflammation that causes the stomach to expand beyond its normal comfortable volume. The effect can range from a mild sense of fullness to a pronounced, visible distension that some users describe as resembling mild pregnancy.
Several mechanisms contribute to substance-induced bloating.
