This is a cautionary report. I'm sharing this from a place of recovery and I hope it helps someone.
Months 1-2: Used as prescribed for sleep issues. It worked beautifully at first. Best sleep I'd had in years. I thought I'd found the answer.
Months 3-4: Started noticing I needed slightly more for the same effect. Instead of talking to my doctor, I adjusted the dose myself. First major mistake. Also started taking it during the day for stress relief.
Months 5-6: By now I was dependent. If I missed a dose, I'd experience rebound insomnia worse than what I'd started with, plus anxiety, irritability, and physical discomfort. I was trapped in a cycle.
Turning point: A friend confronted me about changes in my behavior. I was forgetting conversations, seemed distant, and my work was suffering. I finally spoke honestly with my doctor.
Recovery: Worked with my doctor on a very gradual taper over several months. It was uncomfortable but manageable with support. Also started therapy and developed non-pharmacological sleep strategies.
Now: 8 months since my last dose. Sleep still isn't perfect but it's genuine sleep. I'm present in my life again.
Please hear this: These substances work, which is exactly what makes them dangerous. If you're prescribed one, use it exactly as directed, keep communication open with your doctor, and be honest with yourself about your patterns.
