I started taking Holy Basil primarily for its anti-inflammatory properties after reading about ursolic acid's effects on NF-kB and COX-2 pathways. I lift heavy 5 days a week and was experiencing persistent joint soreness and general systemic inflammation (elevated CRP on bloodwork).
After 6 weeks of consistent use at 800mg daily, I noticed three things:
Joint soreness decreased. Not eliminated, but the persistent ache in my knees and elbows that was always present between training sessions faded to a much more manageable level. I was able to reduce my ibuprofen use from 3-4 times per week to maybe once.
Subjective recovery improved. I felt less beaten up the day after heavy sessions. The deep fatigue that used to follow leg day was still there but less crushing.
Sleep quality improved substantially, which I attribute partly to reduced cortisol. Better sleep means better recovery, so this compounds the other benefits.
I also noticed reduced overall stress and anxiety, which was a welcome secondary benefit I was not expecting. Training itself felt better -- I was less likely to walk into the gym already feeling stressed and depleted.
Follow-up bloodwork after 3 months showed CRP had dropped from 3.2 to 1.8 mg/L. This is just an n=1 observation and many variables could contribute, but the timing aligns with Holy Basil use.
I now consider Holy Basil a staple in my supplement regimen alongside creatine, omega-3s, and magnesium. It fills a unique niche as a natural anti-inflammatory adaptogen.
