I am an Ayurvedic medicine enthusiast and was intrigued by the traditional pairing of Gotu Kola (Mandukaparni) and Bacopa (Brahmi) -- both classified as Medhya Rasayanas in classical texts. I decided to take both while preparing for my Step 2 boards.
I had already been taking Bacopa alone for about 2 months and appreciated its memory consolidation effects, but found it made me a bit lethargic in the afternoons. Adding Gotu Kola at 500mg in the morning fundamentally changed the character of the stack.
The lethargy from Bacopa was replaced by a calm alertness. I could study for 4-5 hour blocks with maintained focus. More importantly, the combination seemed to enhance memory encoding beyond what either compound achieved alone. I was retaining pathophysiology details that would normally require 3-4 review cycles after just 1-2 exposures.
The anxiolytic effects were more pronounced with the combination than with either alone. Board exam preparation is incredibly stressful, and I was sleeping better and worrying less than classmates who were taking pharmaceutical anxiolytics.
One observation: the Gotu Kola seemed to offset Bacopa's tendency to reduce motivation. Bacopa alone made me feel like I could remember everything but did not particularly care about doing so. Adding Gotu Kola restored a gentle drive and engagement with the material.
I passed Step 2 with a score 20 points above my practice exam average. I cannot attribute this solely to the stack -- I was also studying hard and using good study methods -- but I genuinely believe the combination supported better encoding, less anxiety-related interference, and more sustainable focus.
The combination has a 3,000-year track record in Ayurvedic medicine. Having experienced it, I understand why.
