I wanted to settle the comparison question for myself, so I did a controlled (well, as controlled as one person can manage) side-by-side test of 20mg gummies from the same manufacturer who makes all three: Delta-8 THC, HHC, and Delta-9 THC. I tested each on separate Saturdays, same time of day (2 PM), same meal two hours before, same music playlist, same activity (listening to music and then watching a movie). Here is what I found.
DELTA-8 THC (20mg):
- Onset: about 50 minutes
- Character: the mildest of the three. A gentle, clear-headed relaxation. Slight mood elevation. Noticeable but undramatic music enhancement. I felt relaxed but not really "high" in the way most people mean the word. Minimal anxiety, minimal impairment. I could have had a conversation with my mother and she would not have noticed.
- Duration: about 4 hours total
- Rating: pleasant but unremarkable. Good for functional relaxation.
HHC (20mg):
- Onset: about 45 minutes -- slightly faster than the Delta-8, which may be coincidence
- Character: noticeably stronger than the Delta-8 at the same dose. The body component was the standout difference — a pronounced physical warmth and heaviness that the Delta-8 lacked. The euphoria was more present, the music appreciation more vivid. Cognitive effects were present but manageable — some thought slowing, mild time distortion, enhanced absorption in whatever I was watching. Minimal anxiety. I felt properly high but not overwhelmed.
- Duration: about 5-6 hours total, with residual effects lasting longer than the Delta-8
- Rating: the sweet spot for me personally. Enough effect to feel worthwhile, not enough to be unmanageable.
DELTA-9 THC (20mg):
- Onset: about 55 minutes
- Character: clearly the strongest of the three at equal doses. The euphoria had a higher ceiling, the sensory enhancement was more intense, and the cognitive effects were more pronounced — including the return of my old friend, the recursive anxious thought loop. The body high was excellent but came with a heaviness that bordered on couch lock. I was more impaired than on HHC — following the movie plot required active effort, and I would not have been coherent in a serious conversation.
- Duration: about 6-7 hours total, with next-morning grogginess
- Rating: the most intense and rewarding peak, but also the most likely to produce anxiety and impairment.
My ranking for different use cases:
- Functional daytime relaxation: Delta-8
- Evening recreation with balance: HHC
- Weekend peak experience: Delta-9
HHC genuinely occupies a middle ground. It is not just "weak Delta-9" — it has a different character, particularly in the reduced cognitive load and the emphasized body component. Whether the pharmacological differences or just the lower potency explain this, I cannot say. But functionally, it fills a niche.
