I am an engineer and I like data. When I decided to try THC-O, I wanted to test the potency claims as rigorously as a sample size of one allows. I designed a simple comparison: 8mg THC-O tincture one Saturday, then 20mg regular THC edible the following Saturday, same conditions both times.
Both products were lab-tested. I took them at 7:00 PM on an empty stomach both times, ate the same dinner at 7:30 PM, listened to the same playlist, and took notes on my phone every 30 minutes until I went to sleep.
Session 1 — 8mg THC-O:
- Onset: 55 minutes (first noticeable effect)
- Peak: approximately T+1:45 to T+3:30
- Body high: 7/10 — heavy, warm, deeply relaxing
- Mental effects: moderate introspection, enhanced music appreciation, mild time distortion
- Appetite: very strong
- Anxiety: none
- Impairment: mild-moderate; could have held a conversation but preferred not to
- Total duration of noticeable effects: approximately 6 hours
- Sleep quality: excellent
Session 2 — 20mg delta-9 THC:
- Onset: 40 minutes
- Peak: approximately T+1:30 to T+3:00
- Body high: 6/10 — warm and pleasant, less heavy than the THC-O session
- Mental effects: similar introspection and music enhancement, slightly less pronounced
- Appetite: strong
- Anxiety: none
- Impairment: mild-moderate, very similar to the THC-O session
- Total duration of noticeable effects: approximately 5 hours
- Sleep quality: good
My assessment: The two sessions were qualitatively very similar, which makes sense if THC-O is metabolized to the same active compound. The THC-O session was slightly more intense overall, particularly in body load and sedation, and lasted somewhat longer. If these two doses produced comparable subjective experiences, the effective potency ratio would be approximately 20/8 = 2.5x, which falls right in the middle of the reported 2-3x range.
This is a single unblinded comparison and proves nothing scientifically. But it is consistent with the existing evidence. THC-O appears to be meaningfully more potent than equivalent milligram doses of delta-9-THC when both are taken orally. The experience itself, however, is fundamentally the same.
