At moderate doses, these distortions become unmistakable — music may sound as though it is being played through water, voices may gain a reverberating or flanging quality, and environmental sounds acquire unusual spatial properties. Several distinct subtypes of auditory distortion can be identified. Dissociatives such as ketamine act through NMDA receptor antagonism, interfering with the glutamatergic signaling essential for accurate temporal and spectral processing of sound. Substance Classes

For harm reduction, a calm environment with familiar, pleasant music at moderate volume is recommended.
