Phenomenology

Dose-Dependent Spectrum

At low doses, auditory enhancement manifests as a gentle increase in the perceived richness and emotional impact of music. Familiar songs may seem slightly more engaging, and one may notice previously overlooked details. At moderate doses, this evolves into a profound transformation of the listening experience — music can produce intense emotional responses, goosebumps, and a sense of being physically immersed in sound. At high doses, every audible sound becomes overwhelmingly detailed and beautiful; even silence itself can seem to contain subtle sonic textures. Pharmacological Mechanisms

Auditory enhancement likely arises from increased neural excitability and connectivity in auditory processing regions. Serotonergic psychedelics achieve this through 5-HT2A-mediated enhancement of thalamocortical signaling, which can lower the threshold for auditory detection and increase the cross-talk between auditory cortex and emotion-processing regions such as the amygdala and insula. Cannabis enhances auditory perception through CB1 receptor modulation of auditory cortex activity. MDMA produces auditory enhancement partly through serotonergic and dopaminergic potentiation of reward-circuit responses to music.

Substance Classes

Auditory enhancement is most reliably produced by serotonergic psychedelics (LSD, psilocybin, mescaline),cannabis,MDMA and entactogens, and to a lesser extentdissociatives at lower doses. LSD is particularly renowned for producing dramatic auditory enhancement that can make even familiar music sound revelatory. Cannabis commonly enhances the emotional and textural aspects of music. Safety and Harm Reduction

Auditory enhancement is one of the most benign and commonly enjoyed subjective effects. The primary risk is exposure to excessively loud music while one's sensitivity is heightened, which can cause discomfort or, in theory, contribute to noise-induced hearing damage. It is advisable to keep volume at moderate levels, as music already sounds louder and more impactful under this effect. In rare cases, the emotional intensity of music during strong auditory enhancement can trigger cathartic emotional releases that may be overwhelming, so having a supportive setting is beneficial.
