External hallucinations are most commonly associated with high doses of deliriants (diphenhydramine, datura, benzydamine), where they are a defining feature and are characteristically mistaken for reality. They also occur with high-dosepsychedelics,dissociatives, duringstimulant psychosis, and following severesleep deprivation.
