At lower levels, external hallucinations may manifest as minor additions or modifications to existing objects — faces might appear in textures, shadows might seem to move with purpose, or peripheral objects might briefly take on unfamiliar forms before "correcting" themselves when examined directly. External hallucinations are most commonly associated with high doses of deliriants (diphenhydramine, datura, benzydamine), where they are a defining feature and are characteristically mistaken for reality.
