MDMA produces a distinctive form of introspection characterized by self-compassion and reduced defensiveness, making it particularly useful in therapeutic contexts for processing trauma.

Subjective reports consistently emphasize the unique quality of substance-enhanced introspection compared to ordinary self-reflection. The ability to examine painful memories and difficult emotions from a place of reduced defensiveness and enhanced self-compassion appears to facilitate psychological processing that can be difficult to achieve through conventional talk therapy alone.

Introspection is closely related to and often co-occurs with several other cognitive effects, including analysis enhancement, personal bias suppression, mindfulness, and emotion intensification.
