Opioid euphoria additionally involves mu-opioid receptor activation in the ventral tegmental area and nucleus accumbens, which triggers endorphin-mediated pleasure pathways evolved for survival-critical rewards. MDMA's euphoria involves massive serotonin and dopamine co-release, with oxytocin providing the warmth and intimacy components. The more intense and rapid-onset the euphoria, the more addictive the substance tends to be.
