At its milder levels, spirituality enhancement may present as a subtle but noticeable increase in feelings of reverence, wonder, and gratitude — a sense that the world is more meaningful, more beautiful, and more interconnected than it normally appears. Colors may seem imbued with deeper significance, natural landscapes may evoke a sense of the sacred, and simple acts like breathing or observing a sunset may feel like participation in something holy. There is often an accompanying feeling of humility and smallness before the vastness of existence that is experienced as comforting rather than diminishing.

Spirituality enhancement is most commonly induced under the influence of moderate to heavy dosages of classical psychedelics such as psilocybin, LSD, mescaline, DMT, and ayahuasca. Research at institutions like Johns Hopkins University has demonstrated that psilocybin can occasion mystical-type experiences that participants rate among the most spiritually significant events of their lives, with effects on personal meaning and spiritual significance persisting for 14 months or more after the session. Dissociatives such as ketamine, entactogens such as MDMA, and certain meditation practices can also produce this effect, though typically with different phenomenological qualities.

The relationship between spirituality enhancement and other cognitive effects is complex and bidirectional. It is frequently accompanied by and intertwined with personal bias suppression, which allows the person to view themselves and their beliefs with unusual objectivity; emotion intensification, which amplifies the feeling content of the experience; and unity and interconnectedness, which provides the perceptual foundation for feelings of mystical oneness. The combination of these effects creates a holistic state that feels qualitatively different from ordinary consciousness in ways that many users describe as the most important experience of their lives.

It is worth noting that spirituality enhancement can occur in both positive and challenging forms. While many users report blissful, loving, and awe-inspiring spiritual experiences, others encounter what might be described as dark mystical states — encounters with cosmic indifference, existential vastness, or the dissolution of comforting beliefs about the nature of self and reality. Both types of experience can be ultimately meaningful and transformative, though the latter may require more integration and support to process constructively.
