Candyflipping is the combination of LSD and MDMA, and it is arguably the most famous drug combination in psychedelic culture. The term originated in the 1980s rave scene and has since become nearly universal slang. The combination produces a synergistic experience that blends LSD's perceptual and cognitive alterations with MDMA's wave of euphoria, empathy, and physical warmth. Users consistently describe it as greater than the sum of its parts — the MDMA smooths out LSD's potential for anxiety and thought loops, while the LSD adds depth, visual complexity, and cosmic significance to MDMA's emotional warmth. It is considered by many experienced users to be among the most profound recreational experiences available.
Imagine the most beautiful sunset you've ever seen, but you can feel it in your chest. Everything has this warm golden glow, and geometric patterns dance across every surface — the walls breathe, colors pulse with the music, and you feel an overwhelming love for everyone around you that feels absolutely real, not chemically forced. The body high comes in waves: electric ripples of pleasure that start at the base of your spine and wash upward. Music doesn't just sound better, it becomes three-dimensional — you can see it, feel it moving through you. During the peak, the boundary between you and the world dissolves, and for a few hours everything feels connected, meaningful, and impossibly beautiful. Many people describe it as the most profound experience of their lives.
LSD acts as a partial agonist at serotonin 5-HT2A receptors, which drives its psychedelic effects — visual distortions, altered cognition, and ego disruption. MDMA works differently: it floods the synapse with serotonin, dopamine, and norepinephrine by reversing their transporters (SERT, DAT, NET), producing intense euphoria and empathy. The synergy occurs because LSD sensitizes 5-HT2A receptors while MDMA simultaneously dumps massive amounts of serotonin into the synaptic cleft — the result is dramatically enhanced 5-HT2A activation beyond what either substance achieves alone. MDMA's dopamine release also adds a reward-circuit euphoria that LSD alone doesn't strongly produce, while LSD's downstream effects on glutamate signaling add perceptual complexity to MDMA's emotional warmth.
The candyflip produces a distinctive combination of effects that neither substance achieves alone. The LSD provides vivid visual enhancements — geometric patterns, color intensification, visual drifting and morphing — while the MDMA adds a powerful layer of physical euphoria, emotional openness, and social connection. The result is often described as "seeing the universe and feeling infinite love for it simultaneously."
The body high is particularly notable: MDMA's signature serotonin-driven warmth and tingling combines with LSD's electric body energy to produce full-body waves of pleasure. Music sounds extraordinarily beautiful, with both substances enhancing auditory perception in complementary ways.
Cognitively, the MDMA tends to reduce LSD's tendency toward challenging thought loops and anxiety, producing a more consistently positive headspace. However, the combination can be overwhelming — the intensity of both substances stacking can produce experiences that feel out of control if doses are not carefully managed.
At the peak, ego dissolution is common even at moderate doses. The combination of LSD's ego-disrupting properties with MDMA's boundary-dissolving empathy can produce profound experiences of unity, interconnectedness, and unconditional love.
| Substance | Solo Dose | Combo Dose | Route |
|---|---|---|---|
| LSD | 100–200 µg | 50–100 µg | Oral |
| MDMA | 100–150 mg | 75–100 mg | Oral |
Critical principle: dose both substances lower than you would solo. The synergy means that standard solo doses become overwhelming in combination.
LSD: 50–100 µg (half to two-thirds of a normal dose). Do not exceed 150 µg for a candyflip unless very experienced.
MDMA: 75–100 mg (lower end of a normal dose). Do not exceed 120 mg. Do NOT redose the MDMA.
Timing is critical. The most common and recommended approach is to take the LSD first and add the MDMA 3–4 hours later. This means the MDMA peaks as the LSD is past its most disorienting phase but still fully active, producing a smooth merge of effects. Taking them simultaneously is more intense and less predictable. Taking the MDMA first is generally not recommended as the MDMA comedown overlapping with an LSD peak can produce anxiety.
T+0:00 — Take LSD (50–100 µg oral).
T+0:30–1:30 — LSD come-up. Gradual onset of visual and cognitive effects.
T+2:00–3:00 — LSD reaching full effects. Visuals, altered thinking, body energy.
T+3:00–4:00 — Take MDMA (75–100 mg oral). This is the sweet spot for timing.
T+3:30–4:30 — MDMA come-up begins. A warm rush of euphoria layers on top of the LSD experience.
T+4:00–6:00 — Peak candyflip. Both substances fully active. Intense visuals, euphoria, empathy, body high. This is the core of the experience.
T+6:00–8:00 — MDMA begins to fade. LSD still active. Gentle transition back toward a pure LSD headspace.
T+8:00–12:00 — LSD gradual comedown. Residual visual effects and cognitive shifts.
T+12:00+ — Return to baseline. May feel tired. Sleep can be difficult.
The candyflip shines in settings where music and visual stimulation combine with social warmth. Music festivals and outdoor raves are the classic candyflip environment — the combination of electronic music, light shows, and crowd energy is intensely amplified. Home settings with close friends work beautifully for a more introspective experience — set up colorful LED lights, put on a curated playlist, and have soft blankets available. Nature settings (beaches, forests, stargazing) during daylight or sunset are extraordinary. Best music genres: psytrance, progressive house, ambient electronica, Shpongle, Tycho, Boards of Canada. Many experienced users recommend having a dedicated "chill zone" available — the intensity can spike suddenly and having a quiet retreat space is valuable.
Serotonin syndrome risk: Both LSD and MDMA affect serotonin systems. While the risk is lower than with MDMA + MAOIs, it is not zero. Never combine a candyflip with SSRIs, SNRIs, MAOIs, or lithium.
Hydration: MDMA impairs thermoregulation. In hot environments (clubs, festivals), overheating is a real risk. Drink water steadily but do not overhydrate — aim for about 500ml per hour if physically active.
Do not redose MDMA: The temptation to redose during an intense experience is strong. Resist it. Redosing increases neurotoxicity without proportionally extending the positive effects.
Set and setting matter even more: The combination is powerful enough that a bad environment or bad headspace can produce extremely difficult experiences. Only candyflip in a safe, comfortable setting with trusted people.
MDMA frequency rules still apply: No more than once every 1–3 months. The LSD does not protect against MDMA neurotoxicity.
Test your substances: Always use reagent test kits. This is non-negotiable. Fentanyl test strips for any powder/pill.
Have a trip sitter: Especially for your first candyflip. The combination can be disorienting.
“Visuals are AMAZING. Like NO OTHER. Some of the most spiritual experiences of my life. You'll glow for DAYS after — sometimes weeks.”
“The bathroom walls were breathing, but really breathing... I saw them compressing and expanding rhythmically, emitting beautiful auras of dim pinkish hues. Candyflip is entirely a different drug, with much potentiated effects than merely the arithmetic sum of Lucy and Molly's effects.”
“Dose the MDMA 3.5 hours after the acid. Trust me on this timing. If you do it right, the MDMA wave hits just as the acid anxiety fades and it's the most beautiful thing you'll ever experience.”
“People started emitting, or vibrating colors. My friends distinctly gave off 'color vibrations' — two glowed in black, while the third was a mellow yellow. Acid visuals seem to flow off into infinity, while visuals on the combination were sharply edged and vibratory.”
